A few years back the late George Na`ope and I were in Hilo Tavern having beers when he began telling me how he loves going to Japan. And he said someone asked him: "Why do you love the Japanese? Didn't they bomb your country?" His reply to that, he said, was: "They did not bomb my country, they bombed the military that was occupying my country."
Similarly, when I was up at Mauna Kea in April, 2015 supporting the "Protect Mauna Kea" group I kept hearing the recurring theme among the Hawaiians, i.e., we are an occupied nation, occupied by the United States, and it's illegal surrogate, the state of Hawaii.
If you subscribe to that position then you should consider that, if Hawaiians are occupied by the U.S., then the U.S. is an enemy of the Hawaiian Kingdom. And the enemies of the U.S. are, therefore, our friends.
If you are a national of the Hawaiian Kingdom, then consider embracing Iran, South Korea, and Palestine for starters. Let's start the conversation.
Uncle George, I miss you. Rest in peace.

"We need to think very, very clearly about who the enemy is. The enemy is the United States of America and everyone who supports it." That's taught to University of Hawaii students by Professor Haunani-Kay Trask.
Posted by Walter Williams in the Washington Examiner 5-14-13 raising the issue that college professors can teach students to hate America.
